ISLAMABAD – The Senate on Friday rejected with majority votes a bill making Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Corporation a public limited company.
The Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (Conversion) Bill, 2015 was moved by Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid on behalf of Minister for State and Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed.
Deputy Chairman Abdul Ghafoor Haideri put the motion to the house for approval but it was rejected with majority of votes. Meanwhile, the opposition lawmakers staged walked out over the remarks of Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khqan Abbasi on Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC).
There was uproar in the house when the minister observed that no province was self-sufficient with regard to the GDIC and it would be spent on national importance projects.
The opposition benches said since Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh were producing more gas, the GIDC should not be collected from them.
